The history of the Brijuni archipelago extends far back. Even before the Christian era Romans settled the islands. Magnificent villas and large estates emerged. Venetians use the islands from the 14th Century, also as a summer resort. In the 18th and 19 Century resulted in a malaria epidemic to the fact that the islands were abandoned.

Between 1947 and his death in 1980, the islands were the residence of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. On the small island Vanga he built his private retreat with Villa and mandarin plantation. Besides various royalty, statesmen and dictators, here he also received numerous artists and movie stars, such as Richard Burton and Sophia Loren.
